We encourage creativty to inspire learning
Art classes are a highlight of most students’ week. The program aims to develop a range of progressive artistic skills by:
- using different mediums and techniques to create a range of two and three dimensional works
- working individually and cooperatively to realise projects from start to finish
- participating in Art Appreciation activities where students learn about artists and their works from a variety of periods and cultures
- working together as a whole school to create the biannual Footscray West Art Show
The dedicated art/craft room is a great space for children to explore their creativity and imagination, develop conceptual and planning skills and master techniques.
Students are introduced to the world of Art through the recreation of famous works such as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and “Sunflowers” and Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”.
Grades 1 /2
With a focus on 3 dimensional construction and art theory, in these years students create, papier mache’ sculpture, mosaics, clay and sewing projects.
Grades 3/ 4
Students are challenged to work cooperatively by co-creating works such as life size robots, skeletal creatures, paintings and mixed media works on paper.
Building upon the skills developed in the earlier years, students now turn their hand to more complex and demanding creations such as life size art works and murals.
The Art Show
All the learning that occurs in the classes culminates in our biannual Art Show. All students produce works to fit a storyline written by the students themselves. It is interactive, epic and a highlight on the school calendar for all members of our community.
